Mr. & Mrs. Mahi - Please Welcome Bollywood's Newest Cricket Drama

"That's the way, mahi ve."

We all know that Bollywood has a prolific genre of inspirational cricket movies, and this is the next one.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is a new 2024 movie that follows the story of Mahendra, played by Rajkummar Rao, and his wife, Mahima, played by Janhvi Kapoor. Mahendra, who's nickname is Mahi, aspires to become a cricket star, but after failing to sufficiently catch the inspector's eye two years in a row, he's forced to work in his father's shop rather than pursue his passion. He then meets his wife, also nicknamed Mahi, who is a successful doctor and marries him because she believes he is an honest man. Together, both of them realize the propensity that Mrs. Mahi has for cricket, and in an attempt to prove his worth, Mr. Mahi embarks on a journey to coach her (and himself) to fame.

The movie may start off with a relatively slow pace, but it picks up and engagingly takes the watchers along on a journey with the characters. The film focuses on evoking emotions and sending messages to it's watchers - so don't go in expecting a very precise and realistic storyline. Rather, the merit lies in the lessons learned and feelings that you relate to them.

So here's what this movie talks about - first of all, it discusses happiness and self-worth. It asserts the idea that life is a race which everyone is trying to win, falling over themselves reaching each goalpost, feeling good for a while, and then scrambling to the next thing. According to this movie, happiness is won from within, from a feeling of contentment with oneself, leaving no doubt to your self-worth. This is definitely an important message which many people struggle with throughout their lives.

Second, the movie talks about fame, which ties into the first idea. It describes how relationships crumble under certain pressure by showing how Mr. Mahi attempted to pursue his own ambitions through Mrs. Mahi. But above that, it presents the idea that trust is the basis of any relationship, and that lies and deception, and personal, selfish gain should not overtake these principles.

And while the plot is predictable, I think that this movie aims to portray the ideas above rather than focus on any particular storyline. And the ending was good, with eventually both being able to make their own decisions rather than blindly following the noise of others. They find contentment within themselves, and with their families.

Overall, the movies is heartfelt with emotional depth, and a good watch, if not for romance or comedy, than at least for drama. I would give it four stars, because while it was good with powerful ideas, and the acting was amazing, I believe it lacked a bit of the gravity and proper resolution to make an extremely impactful ending.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Side note: The songs were good and not excessive.
